When I graduated I had to return to get the piece of paper. If I had not, I would not have been able to prove to my employers that I was who I claimed to be and would consequently have been on a lower salary. The university in question told me I was too late to get in at the nearest graduation ceremony but not to worry, there would be another one in six months time. Six months on half pay was not too enticing a prospect so I kicked and shouted a bit and they deigned to squeeze me in to the nearest ceremony. It was a combination of two different institutions' inflexibility and red tape that left me fed up with all the pomp.
