Welcome

Right so, you've somehow ended up on my website so I should probably tell you a bit about myself. My name is Dr Jody Byrne and in addition to being a professional translator, I'm a lecturer at the University of Sheffield where I teach translation and localization.

I obtained my BA in translation and PhD in technical translation from Dublin City University where my research focused on technical translation and usability. My dissertation has since been transformed into a book entitled Technical Translation: Usability Strategies for Translating Technical Documentation. I also spent three years teaching German into English technical and economic translation at DCU. This is a picture of me in my lovely robes at my graduation. I'm in the process of preparing the rest of the photos for the site so this will have to do for the time being. Red and gold is such a lovely combination eh?

I have been a professional translator since I graduated from DCU with my BA in Applied Languages (Translation & Interpreting) and I have worked as a freelance and in-house translator, software and website localiser, technical writer, interpreter, webmaster and localisation project manager. I'm also a professional member of the Irish Translators' and Interpreters' Association and a Fellow of the Institute of Scientific & Technical Communicators.

I also founded ITIA's monthly electronic newsletter, the ITIA Bulletin. Click here to subscribe. My workload during the last year of my PhD meant that I had to give up editing the Bulletin although it's still going strong under its new editor.

Anyway, this site is permanently under construction so expect to find some things that don't quite work as you'd expect them to! Excuse the mess
