Module Aims:

  • To develop translation skills and linguistic sensitivity

  • To encourage students to reflect on issues of linguistic equivalence and cultural difference

  • To encourage students to integrate contrastive linguistic knowledge into the translation process

  • To provide a forum for the integration of technology into a language-based activity

Learning Outcomes:

Students will be expected to be able to:

  • Source appropriate subject-specific information

  • Use background information to understand new terminology and concepts encountered in source language texts

  • Use technology to support the translation process

  • Articulate differences between language systems and between texts in one or two language(s)

  • Identify source language structures specific to scientific and technical texts and translate using appropriate target language structures

  • Produce accurate and grammatical translations of semi-specialised texts

Indicative Time Allowances:                

Lectures: 12
Tutorials: 12

Indicative Syllabus:

  • Using paper and electronic information sources

  • Contrastive stylistics

  • Use of concordancers in translation

  • Using word processors effectively

  • Translation of a range of text types from Information Technology and Computational Linguistics including texts from textbooks, popular science journals, information booklets, etc.

Assessment:

End-of-module translation assignment:     100%
