GE504 - Specialised German Translation



Module Title: Scientific/Technical Translation: German

Module Aims:

  • develop student’s ability to translate texts at an advanced level

  • enable students to deal competently with issues of equivalence and difference

  • develop subject-specific research capacity

  • prepare students for submission of professional translation assignments

Learning Outcomes:

Students will be expected to be able to:

  • translate accurately and in an appropriate style

  • present work in a professional manner

  • be familiar with professional practices in the translation environment

  • research and manage specialised terminology and data.

 

Indicative Time Allowances:

Lectures: 24 hours
 

Indicative Syllabus:
Materials:
Texts for translation will be drawn from a variety of sources e.g. technical reports, specialist journal articles, technical manuals and promotional material, on topics covering different areas of science and technology.
 

Assessment:

Two hour translation exam (250-400 words) at end of semester two 100%
N.B. Monolinugal and bilingual dictionaries, thesauri and student glossaries (printed or handwritten) are permitted.

Essential:
background documentation in SL and TL
general and specialized monolingual, bilingual and multilingual dictionaries and other reference sources
language-specific sources to be specified by the relevant lecturers e.g. popular and specialised scientific journals
